Post-doctoral position

A post-doctoral position in the general area of material science and mechanics related to wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is available in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Northeastern University, Boston, MA. The aim of the work is to investigate the thermomechanical causes of residual stresses and to assess the general build quality by experimental and modeling approaches.  FLIR and other non-contact measurement techniques will be used for in-situ process monitoring. XRD will be used to assess residual stresses. Microstructural characterization and structural strength tests will be performed.  Continuum-based multi-physics models for optimized mechanical and microstructural properties in WAAM will be developed.  Experience with WAAM, metallurgy, mechanical and microstructural characterization and finite element techniques to model phase change are required for the position.

A Ph.D. or equivalent in mechanical engineering, material science, physics or a similar field is required. The candidates should be able to undertake full-time research and scholarship, work under the supervision of senior scholars and colleagues. They also should have laboratory experience and computational skills in the research area and be able to work with a large group of lab personnel.

Interested candidates should submit a CV, a letter of intent and names of two references to  Sinan Muftu (s.muftu@northeastern.edu).
