An immediate opening for a postdoc position is available at Columbia University, the Department of Surgery. The project is funded by the National Institute of Health and is available for two years with an option for extension to a third year.
The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists from the Departments of Surgery, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics on an exciting computational design optimization project of a cardiovascular device. The candidate will lead the optimization effort and coordinate the research activities between all group members. The project is expected to lead to new patents, publications, and conference presentations.
Requirements:
- Proven record in design optimization (e.g. publications, conference presentations, thesis) as related to topology and/or sizing and/or shape optimization of structures is a must. Knowledge of gradient-based or heuristic-based optimization is required.
- Strong background in the finite element method and mechanics of materials is a must. Knowledge in constitutive modeling of polymeric materials and/or soft materials are especially welcomed.
- Proficiency in computer programming is a must. In particular knowledge of python scripting would be considered a significant advantage.
- Knowledge of commercial software in Computer Aided Design (e.g. SolidWorks or other) and Finite Element Methods (e.g. LS-Dyna or other) is especially welcomed.
- Knowledge of parallel computing using OpenMP and/or MPI would be considered an advantage.
