Open Postdoc Position on Computational fluid dynamics at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine

The Artificial Organ Lab at the Departments of Surgery at the University of Maryland is a national leader in the development of circulatory and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support devices. The group is led by a team of engineers and clinicians well-versed in the engineering, clinical, and scientific aspects of medical devices. The research activities are carried out within a multidisciplinary research and design team consisting of clinicians, surgeons, scientists, engineers, residents, and students. The group is seeking a Mechanics Postdoc to assess the blood flow characteristics for supporting the design and development of next-generation ECMO devices with minimal damage to blood cells.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will design, develop, and optimize the method\algorithm for assessing blood damage in the blood-contacting medical device (BCMD), e.g., circulatory assist and ECMO, using engineering modeling, computer-aided design (CAD), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We are specifically interested in applicants with experience in computational mechanics, algorithm design, multi-scale simulation, and high-performance computation. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

•          Use established procedures to improve the existing methods of evaluating blood damage

•          Perform detailed design and development of user-defined algorithm (code) implemented in CFD solvers for solving large-scale simulations in assessing blood flow in BCMDs.

•          Work as a team member, leader or individual to research, develop, test, and evaluate the method in various devices.

•          Assisting in the design and development of in-vitro experiments to compare the simulated result.

Qualifications:

The applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. degree in computational mechanics\mathematics or related disciplines (mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or equivalent) with broad knowledge of CFD and numerical methods for solving partial differential equations. Previous work experience in the areas of CAD, biomechanical, mathematical modeling, user-defined algorithm design, and high-performance computation is highly preferred. Familiarity with both Eulerian and Lagrangian methods in CFD is a big plus.
