Two PhD Positions in Applied Mechanics at UMass Lowell

We have two openings for PhD studies at University of Massachusetts, Lowell, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Position # 1 focuses on design of multi-material cellular microstructure for high energy absorption and other extreme mechanical properties (e.g. auxeticity). The structuers have nonlinear behavior both in materaial response (elastomers) and geometrically and are fabricated using novel mulit-material TPE 3D-printing. The effect of uncertainity and defects are to be studied and designs that are tolearant such stochasticity, inherent in 3D printing, are to be developed using multi-fidelity approaches.

Position # 2 focuses on

(a) to develop analyltical and computational tools to model the wave interaction and scattering at the interfaces between micro-structured media and homogeneous domain,

(b) to evalulate the proposed models experimentally using additively (or otherwised) manufacutres specimens, and

(c) to propose new design rules for microstructured materials, in particular with focus on low frequency resonant metamaterials, with applications in sensing, protection, mitigation, basee on discoveries in (a) and (b).

The positions is open immediately. For further information and interest, please email alireza_amirkhizi@uml.edu
