3D fracture analysis using Ansys

hi,

i m vijay doing M.TECH in aerospace,  i m doing project in the area of fracture mechanics using Ansys, so i need to find Energy release release rate for 3D plate (composite plate having cracks on thikness). i want material related to this, can anyone plz send the material.

thanks in advance

I suggest you trying this CODE (FRANC2D/CASCA/OSM/FRANC3D/BES ).

hello sir,

thanks for your help, but i dont understand this code because i dont have enough knowledge about coding, can u send me some tutorials related to this.

thanks

You can examine the documentation at http://www.cfg.cornell.edu/software/software_documentation.htm . Below, I will try to explain how to install, start and use the program in a very basic way.

- In order to use Franc3d, you should first install cygwin inclusing XFree 86 package, which is fully free from http://www.cygwin.com/ . If you are not sure which packets to install, just install every package. Install it, for example, directly to main directory of C.

- Go to Cornell site again and download Franc3d, OSM and BES from the page http://www.cfg.cornell.edu/software/software.htm

- Unzip the these files for example directly into C/cywin folder. That is it for installation.

- Then go to c:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat (or wherever you installed cygwin) to open a bash shell.

- Here when you two times go to an upper directory (that is, type cd .. (that is write "cd blank dot dot" and press enter two times)) you can reach to c/cygwin. Here if you type "dir" for example, you can see the directory listing. As you already copied your franc, OSM and Bes here just type OSM.EXE

 - OSM starts. You can use OSM to create your own model files. It is a fairly strong software to design relatively simpler geometries. But if you are modelling very complex components, it may be better to import them from one of the accepted formats. You will see these formats on the right side of the OSM screen.

- Save your OSM file first in OSM format (while you may in the future play with the geometry) then as a Franc3d file

- Close OSM and write on the bash shell franc3d.exe

-Franc3d starts. Import the geometry via "read geometry file" button on the upper left side of the screen.

- Add a crack

- Define material properties and boundary conditions

- Mesh the model

-Save the file as a BES file

-Press "run bes analysis" button

-Import the results via "read bes file" button

-Enjoy your results

That is it. Of course about how to draw the model or how to create a good mesh, it is much better if you first read the manuals and examples.

Regards,

Volkan

all the steps that you wrote is functional but FRANC3D can be coupled with ansys and i´m trying do it, but when i want to execute ansys from fracd3d in the bash shell appear that ansys cannot be execute from frac3d can someone help me?

Dear Mr.  Volkan_HH

I have tried to install cygwin, franc 3D and OSM as you have instructed. but haven't succeeded. Can I have some video tutorial for installation and using Bash cell?

I don't know how to couple them but if you are interested, using FEM results as boundary conditions of Franc3d through MRP files are relatively easy. (Actually, if you have ANSYS it is very easy but any FEM package is in principal OK. For example, I am using Solidworks with Cosmosworks package). Using MRP's you can solve just the problematic portion of the model in Franc3d instead of full one (if you have a FEM solution for the full model).

Volkan

i have frnc3d  tool it notworking how it will work plz answer me

hi.............

hi all

i have a meshing problem in ansys,i made a crack but crack is too small, its like 1 micron,i tried everyting in meshing part in ansys, smartsize, manual size, concentrate KPs but meshing didnt exist, can someone who knows ansys well help me please?

my email: gunay_sul@hotmail.com

I did everyting as Volkan instructed, but my instalation doesn't work.

when I wrote in cygwin shell franc3d.exe

shell gives me note: requested command not found

the same is with osm, bes
