Postdoctoral Fellowship - Computational Solid Mechanics

Postdoctoral Research Position – Computational Solid Mechanics Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD, US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD WMRD has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research associate to conduct research in high rate damage and failure of ductile and brittle materials. Researcher would be part of a team that includes scientists at WMRD/ARL and faculty and students in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at The Johns Hopkins University under a Cooperative Research Agreement.

Major goals of our research are to develop physical understanding and models of dynamic failure mechanisms and to construct and implement computational models that capture the essence of the physics. Recent work has included analysis of adiabatic shear, dynamic void nucleation and growth, fracture based on detailed microstructure, and internal rupture based on a statistical representation of microstructure. Recent and planned work on deformation mechanisms in lower symmetry materials (twinning, amorphization, stacking faults, etc.) will require new approaches to dynamic failure in order to capture the new insights being gained. As understanding deepens, it will become possible to design materials (composition and microstructure) and material response to dynamic stimulus.
Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • US citizenship (required)
  • PhD degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, engineering mechanics, or computational physics
  • Knowledge of constitutive modeling for elastic/inelastic materials
  • Experience with MatLab/Mathematica, numerical methods, and programming for finite elements, discrete elements, and/or particle methods

Also desirable

  • Advanced mathematical methods
  • Atomistic and/or molecular dynamics methods
  • Familiarity with experimental techniques
