Convergence problem about progressive failure analysis of anisotropic composite laminates

In the progressive failure analysis, three microcosmic failure modes are assumed for anisotropic composite laminates: fiber breakage, matrix cracking and interfacial debonding. The Tasi-wu failure criterion is used to determine each failure mode. If some failure mode appears, the Young's modulus in some direction degraded. For example, if the failure occurs at the fiber direction, the fiber-direction Young's modulus set to a new value by multiplying a degraded constant within 0 to 1. After several progressive failure, the Young's modulus in the fiber direction may be zero (or approaching zero very closely), leading to the convergence problem. Therefore, my question is how to determine the final failure strength of composite laminates on the conditions of the assurance of convergence.
