From Dr John-Paul Latham
Dear colleague
Many of you may recall from presentations and discussions at the DEM conferences (Beijing, Brisbane and Sante Fe) that Ante Munjiza and I have in recent years been working on a platform of tools called the Virtual Geoscience Workbench, (VGW) http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/earthscienceandengineering/research/energyenvmodmin/vgw/ <http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/earthscienceandengineering/research/energyenvmodmin/vgw/> based mainly on the combined discrete finite element method.
We are now inviting you or any chosen delegates from your research group to come to our first open workshop on VGW. We intend to pack it into one day, the 30th March '09, (it is a Monday) to try and make it as rewarding and economically feasible as possible. There is no charge to attend, and of course the tools are Open Source and available to use. Most of the afternoon will be hands-on and the aim is to have you going back to your institution having learned, through personal experience, how the VGW tools can be downloaded from the Sourceforge site (designed for Open Source project management), and then used to address example problems. How the domain could be configured to handle more complexity and the needs of industry will become apparent to varying degrees depending on application. Coupling between fluids and solids is not part of the hands-on session but we hope to illustrate what we have done in this area.
So, please see if you can fit in a visit to Imperial College London this Spring - just two months away. Depending on numbers, we may need to adjust some of the arrangements to suite, so please keep an eye on the VGW webpage.

Please email to say if you plan to attend the workshop on or before March 6th.
