Hi
I am going to do a nonlinear analysis of a couple of composite plates, in order to investigate what happens after first ply failure of a specimen.
Doing this using Ansys shell91, but no tutorials on how to build a(composite) model is available, nor choise of failure criteria.. (Tsai-Wu, etc....)
In short I do not know a lot of how to do this, but NEED to find out, hints tips anyone??

ANSYS - Failure Criteria
Hello,
Well despite the element you use in order to create your model, ANSYS does not provide any discrete failure criteria regarding the failure modes incorporated in composite plates. You can issue TSAI-WU failure criteria as a postprocessing tool, in oder to predict first ply failure or a failed region of plies and/or elements. If you need to perform a Progressive Failure Analysis (PFA) , ANSYS cannot help you with its built-in capabilities. In case you need a PFA then you have to script your oun algorithm in APDL (Ansys Programming Design Language). If you need more information about this I can assist you, as i have made some codes of my own, which take account for discrete failure modes, and lead to the degradation of the material properties in the framework of a loop.
PS: Regarding the tutorials you are asking for, regarding the modelling of composite materialsit is very difficult to find any tutorials. But any problems you find during your analysis you can aks herein.

Hi Thanks a lot! I am relatively new to composites, but got the basics figured out, the same goes with Ansys. Have been using Ansys for some years to do steel structures and analysis, but never for composites.(or nonlinear analysis) As you mentioned I have found it really hard to find anything to learn me anything of how to do modelling and analysis of composites, I have searched books and papers literally everywhere trying to find the information I need in order to learn myself how to do this. Because of the low availability of knowledge on the subject, my progress has been rather low. The best I have been able to find had been from the Ansys customer portal, which contain some simple composite examples without to much explanation. This would be MY best advice for anyone else who need to start learning composites in Ansys.This is what I need: Basics of composite modelling - How to use the failure criteria’s and how to interpret the results - how to do the non-linear analysis and how to apply correct step increments in order to achieve convergence - how to do an eigenvalue buckling analysis - also possibly how to build (programme) a progressive failure modelANY information hints or tips on the above from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated!!
