Much has been published about structure transformation of nanowires, nanorods, and nanoplates, under mechanical loading. Beyond hypes, the bottom line of these nanostructure tranformation is a simple piece of surface science - surface reconstruction and relaxation, which could be assisted by mechanical loading. Using ab initio calculations and analytical argument, we show such relationship for ZnO in this recent Applied Physics Letters (uploaded).
