Faculty Positions at Univ of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong Univ. Joint Institute
The University of Michigan (UM) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) have established a Joint Institute (JI) in Shanghai with a commitment to build a world-class academic research and educational institution. The UM-SJTU Joint Institute invites applications for tenure-track (Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor) positions in all emerging fields of engineering with emphasis on mechanical and electrical/computer engineering. These positions are open to top caliber applicants from around the world. With its unique academic mission in China and connection to SJTU's established research, the JI offers faculty extraordinary opportunities to develop major research programs.
The JI was formally launched in April 2006 with strong support from both partner universities and the Chinese government. It has autonomy to model itself after world-class research universities using the US university model. The students are among China's best. In the next five years, the JI will reach a steady state of 2000 students (1400 undergraduates, 200 masters,200 Ph.D., and 200 international students). Based on this plan, a number of full-time tenure track faculty positions will be filled on a continuing basis. The JI offers Mechanical and Electrical/Computer Engineering degrees.
Successful candidates will be expected to establish vigorous research programs, mentor PhD students, participate in the international research community, and teach undergraduate and graduate classes. Teaching duties will be in either mechanical engineering or electrical/computer engineering. English is the JI's official language. Candidates should possess a doctoral degree and demonstrate research accomplishment or potential. Salary will be highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The JI has a tenure review and promotion system comparable to that at major US research universities. Owing to its affiliation with the UM and SJTU, JI faculty have opportunities to collaborate with UM and SJTU faculty.
