The Idaho National Laboratory has an opening for a Postdoctoral Appointee in the area of laser-based characterization of mechanical and thermal properties.  This position is co-sponsored by the Fuel Cycle Research and Development program and the Center for Materials Science of Nuclear Fuel.  The candidate must have completed a PhD degree in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical engineering or a related field.  The candidate should have a strong background in the development of continuum based models and/or a strong background in optics.  The main objective of this project is to use laser ultrasound and thermal wave imaging to characterize materials in extreme radiation and temperature environments.  The candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with a team of researchers having Physics, Materials Science and Electrical Engineering backgrounds. Idaho National Laboratory has been designated as the lead Department of Energy laboratory for all aspects of nuclear fuel research and development in the United States.  INL has the most comprehensive single-location nuclear fuel research capabilities in the US and , in particular, the most complete and advanced complement of post irradiation examination capability for studying the effect of intense neutron and gamma radiation on reactor materials and fuels.   Idaho National Laboratory is located in southeastern Idaho on the Snake River Plain.  The region is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts with Yellowstone National Park to the north, the Teton mountain range to the east, and Sun Valley ski resort to the west.
