Softening behavior in Mohr-Couloumb

hi my friends, i am new in Abaqus, while i am making a uniaxial compression test for coal  sample using Abaqus 6.6, the failure criteria is Mohr-coloumb plasticity, i know that the behavior of coal is strain softening. i should use this table to simulate the hardening/softening behavior of material.

 cohesion  yield stress

 Absloute plastic strain

i know that the first row will be the yield stress and the zero plastic strain.

but i want to know, shall i use second row for the peak stress and the associated plastic strain, and the third row for the post peak stress and the associated plastic strain, or only the first row will be enough.

please help me, because i spend many time trying to figure out what this problem.

thanks

Gamal

Gamal,

You may want to try all three rows in order to have softening.  Remember to subtract off the elastic strain from the total strain.

Recognize that when you introduce softening (and conceivably before softening starts if there is a nonassociated flow law) you add the possibility of localization behavior and possible nonconvergence issues.  Your problem may become mesh dependent.

Regards,

Matt
