Call for Abstract: ASME IMECE: Track 4-4 Mechanics of Nanostructured Materials for Energy Applications (due on February 28)

Dear all:

The 2011 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) will be held in November 11-17, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. As the topic co-chair, I hope to get you involved at the Congress. Abstract submission is now open and the deadline is on February 28, 2011.

We welcome abstracts corresponding to the description as follows:

Nanostructured materials play a key role in most aspects of energy. For example, nanorods and nanoparticles of large surface areas may serve as excellent electrodes of batteries and fuel cells, nanoparticles enforced alloys are radiation resistant materials of nuclear reactors, and materials based on nanofluidic composites may actively and efficiently convert or store energy. Some nanostructured materials in the applications are standing alone and others are constituents of integrated structures. However, common to these materials is that they generally are subject to mechanical deformation, which not only imposes reliability issues (for example, the volume of electrodes during charging and discharging of batteries can change by several hundred percent), but it is also envisioned that the mechanical deformation may enable new energy storage/conversion mechanisms.

In order to successfully apply nanostructured materials in energy technologies, it is critical to understand their mechanical responses. This session serves a platform for presentation of both experimental and modeling researches in nanomechanics.

Session topics include, but not limited to:

-Atomistic simulations of mechanics of individual nanostructures.
-Multi-scale modeling of mechanics of both individual and integrated nanostructures.
-Experimental characterizations of mechanics of both individual and integrated nanostructures.
-Applications of nanostructures in energy technologies.

Thank you,
