PhD Position in Mechanical Metamaterials & Solid Mechanics

Submitted by Michele Brun on

The University of Cagliari (UniCA, Italy) has opened the call for applications for the PhD Programme in Industrial Engineering (Cycle XLII - Academic Year 2026/2027).

The research activity will be hosted at the Department of Mechanical, Chemical and Materials Engineering (DIMCM). We are looking for talented and motivated candidates with a strong background in Solid Mechanics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or Mechanical/Civil/Materials/Aerospace Engineering.

Research Topics include:

  1. Surface Wave Manipulation in Multiphysics Microstructured Systems: guiding, filtering, and wave-steering in structured media and metamaterials.
  2. Modeling Advanced Thermomechanical Metamaterials: theoretical and numerical modeling of materials with strongly negative thermal expansion (NTE) or single-sign thermal response.
  3. Novel Architected Materials with Decoupled Static and Kinematic Formulations: generalized continuum theories and microstructures with exotic mechanical properties.

Requirements: M.Sc. degree (completed or near completion) in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or Materials Science.

Application Deadline: 28 September 2026
