Ph.D. Position — Multiscale Modeling of Materials Under Extreme Conditions (Fall 2027) AIDE² Lab

A Ph.D. position is available in the AIDE² Lab, directed by Dr. Kasra Momeni, starting Fall 2027. The successful candidate will work on multiscale modeling of materials under extreme conditions, with an emphasis on the modeling and simulation of material synthesis and processing.

Research scope

The project sits at the intersection of computational materials science and manufacturing process design. Depending on the candidate's background and interests, the work may involve phase-field modeling of phase transformations and microstructure evolution, molecular dynamics, continuum and finite-element analysis, CALPHAD-informed thermodynamics, and machine-learning surrogates that link these scales. Target applications include synthesis and processing routes for materials that must survive extreme thermal, mechanical, or irradiation environments.

Eligibility

Because of funding restrictions, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, applied physics, chemical engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong background in solid mechanics, thermodynamics, or materials physics
  • Programming experience (Python, C/C++, or Fortran); prior exposure to LAMMPS, MOOSE, Abaqus, COMSOL, or comparable tools is a plus
  • Interest in high-performance computing and data-driven materials design
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
