Post-doctoral Research Associate Position

A post-doctoral research associate position is available immediately in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Maryland NanoCenter at the University of Maryland, College Park, in the area of multi-scale modeling (from atomistic, molecular, coarse-grained to continuum) of carbon-based nanostructured materials. Material properties of specific interest include mechanical and electrical properties, with special focus on deformation/failure mechanisms and bandgap engineering.

Crack modeling

Dear all.

this is vinaya from Indian institute of technology-Bombay, and i am
working of interaction effect of cracked openings and i got the
analytical results,

now, i am going to work in FEM software to validate my analytical results.

my problem is, i am having two cracks, that is , four crack tips..
i want to model four crack-tips. but i think it is not possible in
ansys.

if u know how to model in ansys or in ABAQUS, please help me..

thanking you

Pijaudier-Cabot and Bazant concept of non local damage

Hello all,

I would like to seek help on a topic on which I am slightly ignorant.

I do not understand the concept of non local damage and the internal length of the non local continuum as described by the well quoted paper of Pijaudier-Cabot and Bazant (1987) in continuum damage mechanics.  So may I please ask the experts in this forum to please explain to me using some simple analogy.

Dependence of relaxation time on the polymer length (via a string of viscoelastic springs)

Dear all,

According to polymer theory, the relaxation time depends on its length (or unit number), and there exist some relationships to describe such dependence. The smaller number of polymer units, the smaller the relaxation time  of the polymer is. How to describe this via a simple model of visco-elastic springs?

Need some info about Mechanics and Control of Chatter Vibrations

Can anyone cite some resources for chatter vibrations...the google search results dont throw up good results...I need some thing that will explain the basics - mechanics, causes, measuring and control of chatter in machine tools!

Modelling a composite wall in ANSYS

Hi,

I am doing a Non-linear Buckling Analysis of a composite wall

I am having hard time modelling the composite wall

The composite wall consists of polystyrene foam as the core element and stucco is applied on either side of the wall.

There is a thin sheet of mesh embedded in the stucco ( please see the attachment for clear visualization).

Boundary Conditions:Uniform compressive load is applied at the top surface and the bottom surface is fixed

what to calculate: Critical Buckling Load, Critical Buckling Stress

iMechanica has over 16,000 registered users

The number of registered users of iMechanica passed 16,000 early today.  The the number of posts passed 6,900, and that of comments, 12,500.

iMechanica was founded in September, 2006, with the mission:

  1. to use the Internet to enhance communication among mechanicians
  2. to pave a way to evolve online all knowledge of mechanics

I quote what I wrote when the number of registered user passed 1000 in early 2007:

Open Ph.D. position in the area of microbial inactivation mechanics

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Rutgers University has an open position for a highly-motivated individual in the area of solid and bio mechanics starting January 2010. The scope of the Ph.D. dissertation will be focused on advancing the understanding of the role of mechanical drivers on the mechanisms responsible for bacterial inactivation. This dissertation, supported by the USDA, will be guided by Prof. Alberto Cuitino in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team in microbiology and food science.

Abaqus - simulation non-destructive testing (ultrasonic) - pipe crack

Dear Sir,

My name is Ibraheem. I am a researcher doing my master degree. In my model I am using ABAQUS for simulating a crack detection in a pipe with ultrasonic testing. I have the following software problems:

1- How to implement the acoustic medium with the tested pipe structure using ABAQUS.

2- Which is best:to use for my model shock or the direct solution stedy state dynamic analysis and how can I implement the best of them.

Open PhD position: Inverse identification from full field measurements

The part of full field displacement measurements is increasing in
experimental mechanics. Their taking into account relies on the
development of suited identification approaches, which have to be able
to take advantage of their richness. When dealing with composites, they
offer the possibility to perform the identification at a scale where
the material is heterogenenous. The goal of this thesis is to apply
inverse approaches on the challenging case of the identification of
heterogeneous elasticity and develop a robust identification

Bending and wrinkling as competing relaxation pathways for strained free-hanging films

A thin film subject to compressive strain can either bend (for large strain gradient) or wrinkle (for small strain gradient). The bending is traditionally used in thermostats (bimetal stripes), but couple of years ago, it was extended to the nanoscale thin films which can bend and roll-up to tubes with defined number of rotations. The wrinkles are also rather common in macro- and microscale thin films.
Here, we developed an equilibrium phase diagram for the shape of
compressively strained free-hanging films by total strain energy
minimization.

Abaqus modelling to find out the time of failure when increasing the temperature???

Hi all,

If you can pls advise me to modelthis experiment.

First I have applied a constantload for the steel member.

Then I have increased thetemperature of one of the member surface with time

until the member got failed.

This resulted in non-uniformtemperature variation across the section.

I have measured the temperaturesof the different surfaces of the member and

I would like to use thesetemperature values in my structural modelling.

Now I would like to model themember so that I can find out the time
