Cephalopod-inspired Design of Electro-mechano-chemically Responsive Elastomers for On-demand Fluorescent Patterning

Recent experiments reveal that a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) probe tip can generate a highly localized strain field in a graphene drumhead, which in turn leads to pseudomagnetic fields in the graphene that can spatially confine graphene charge carriers in a way similar to a lithographically defined quantum dot (QD). While these experimental findings are intriguing, their further implementation in nanoelectronic devices hinges upon the knowledge of key underpinning parameters, which still remain elusive.

Silicon is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its enormous theoretical energy density. Fracture during electrochemical cycling has limited the practical viability of silicon electrodes, but recent studies indicate that fracture can be prevented by taking advantage of lithiation-induced plasticity. In this paper, we provide experimental insight into the nature of plasticity in amorphous LixSi thin films. To do so, we vary the rate of lithiation of amorphous silicon thin films and simultaneously measure stresses.

I obtained Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics at Carnegie Mellon University. My thesis work involves developing multiscale method for retrieving slow-time scale behavior from molecular dynamics.

The theme of the conference this year is <strong> Synergy of Modeling and Experiments in Biomechanics, Bioengineering and Biotransport </strong>.

A short overview of micromechanical models of hierarchical materials (hybrid composites, biomaterials, fractal materials, etc.) is given. Several examples of the modeling of strength and damage in hierarchical materials are summarized, among them, 3D FE model of hybrid composites with nanoengineered matrix, fiber bundle model of UD composites with hierarchically clustered fibers and 3D multilevel model of wood considered as a gradient, cellular material with layered composite cell walls.

The aim of this Journal Club is to provide a forum for discussing the role of applied mechanics in bioelectrochemical systems such as microbial fuel cells, and the potential of computational mechanics during upscaling of those systems.

MS 54: Multiscale Modeling and Simulation of Fracture and Fragmentation Processes

IMATI-CNR and the Mathematics Department of the University of Pavia offer a postdoc position on isogeometric analysis. This research project focuses on the design and implementation of innovative isogeometric methods for solid/fluid mechanics.  In particular the target applications are related to

- nearly-incompressible and fibered materials

- fluids in geological formations

This research project is partially supported by the private sector, and is supervised by Annalisa Buffa and Giancarlo Sangalli.

This 52th meeting of the Society of Natural Philosophy, entitled “Scale Bridging in Mathematical and Mechanical Sciences”, is focused on the formulation, analysis, and simulation of boundary-value and initial-boundary-value problems for partial-differential equations describing the behavior of materials which exhibit complexity and structure on varying length and time scales. Attention is specifically addressed to the mechanics of complex fluids and solids, including nano- and biomaterials.

It is my pleasure to solicit nominations for the "Eshelby Mechanics Award for Young Faculty". This award, launched in 2012, is given annually to rapidly emerging junior faculty who exemplify the creative use and development of mechanics. The intent of the award is to promote the field of mechanics, especially among young researchers. While interdisciplinary work that bridges mechanics with physics, chemistry, biology and other disciplines is encouraged, the ideal awardee will demonstrate clear inspiration from mechanics in his/her research.

High-performance stretchable electronics have to utilize high-quality inorganic electronic materials such as silicon, oxide or nitride dielectrics, and metals. These inorganic materials usually crack or yield at very small intrinsic strains, for example, 1%, whereas bio-integrated electronics are expected to at least match the stretchability of bio-tissues (20%) and deployable structure health monitoring networks are expected to expand from wafer scale (several centimeters) to cover macroscopic structures (several meters).
