The newly established group for Cyber-physical Simulation at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU Darmstadt in Germany is offering a position for a Research Assistant in Computational Mechanics. Potential research areas include finite element methods, isogeometric analysis, design optimization, multi-scale & multi-physics, data-driven methods and additive manufacturing applications.
Professors Wilkins Aquino and John Dolbow at Duke University are soliciting applications for candidates interested in a postdoctoral fellowship in computational mechanics at Duke University. Applicants are expected to have experience in the development of numerical methods for problems in mechanics. Experience with nonlinear systems of equations, high-performance computing, C++, and/or meshless methods will be viewed favorably.
Shape memory ceramics are a unique family of shape memory materials with a wide variety of applications, such as ultra-high energy dissipation and high-temperature actuation. Along with significant progress in the experimental study of zirconia-based shape memory ceramics in recent years, computational simulations have exhibited powerful capabilities in revealing nano/microstructure-dependent deformation and failure mechanisms in these materials.
A postdoc position is available in the Qiming Wang group at the University of Southern California. The successful candidate is expected to work on the additive manufacturing of architected materials.
The candidates with the following research backgrounds are welcome to apply: (1) polymer synthesis and characterization, (2) photopolymerization-based additive manufacturing (e.g., stereolithography, two-photon, PolyJet, and others), and/or (3) mechanics of smart materials and structures.
Good oral and written English skills are required.

We formulate a geometric nonlinear theory of the mechanics of accretion. In this theory the reference configuration of an accreting body is represented by a time-dependent Riemannian manifold with a time-independent metric that at each point depends on the state of deformation at that point at its time of attachment to the body, and on the way the new material is added to the body. We study the incompatibilities induced by accretion through the analysis of the material metric and its curvature in relation to the foliated structure of the accreted body.
