Dr. Xiaoyu Tang’s group in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University has multiple fully funded Ph.D. positions in the area of Fluid Mechanics and Soft Matter. Research in the group focuses on multiphase flow, microfluidics, and active colloidal systems, using both experimental and numerical techniques. Selected candidates are expected to start in Fall 2021. Visiting students/scholars are always welcome.

Qualification

STORM-BOTS is a new european training network (ITN) dedicated to liquid crystalline elastomers and soft robotics.

We are seeking to fill 13 early stage researcher (ESR) positions across Europe, including openings for chemists, fabricators, roboticists and theorists. The ESRs will collaborate on the design and creation of liquid crystal elastomers devices, and will benefit from training and secondment opportunities coordinated by the network.  Twelve of the positions include enrolment in a PhD program, while one is primarily based in a company.

Dr John Biggins (supervisor) and Prof Mark Warner FRS (co-supervisor) are searching for a talented theorist with interests in mechanics and geometry to work on the design of soft liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) machines. The studentship is part of a new Marie Sklodowska-Curie training network called storm-bots, which will encompass 13 students across Europe working on the design and creation soft LCE machines. The soft, anisotropic materials of the project, liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and glasses, contract along their director on heating/illumination.

Morphology instability of substrate-supported carbon atomic layers can be harnessed to modulate physical properties and functions, which has drawn interesting attention. Curvature would be a critical factor affecting surface morphology and its stability characteristics. Infilled carbon nanotubes, that is to say carbon monolayers with curved geometry and infilled substrates, namely nanosleeves, widely exist in the literature and have many potential applications.

The Multiscale Materials Modelling Team in WMG (University of Warwick), led by Dr Figiel, is currently seeking a Research Fellow to carry out research in the area of Computational Micromechanics of Solid-state Batteries. This post is part of a large consortium SOLBAT (https://www.solbat-faraday.org/), focussed on developing next-generation solid-state batteries, which has been led by the University of Oxford, and funded by the Faraday Institution (https://faraday.ac.uk/).

We are now seeking to fill an academic position at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader rank for a successful academic to join the Division of Systems, Power and Energy Engineering. We specifically seek a candidate who can potentially contribute to the James Watt School of Engineering in the area of modelling of materials and/or processes at lower length scales where continuum assumption ceases to be valid.

A new PhD position is availale at Tribology and Suface Mechanics (TSM) group for Fall 2021/Spring 2022. Candidates with strong mechanical engineering background on both experimental and analytical works are encouraged to apply. In particular, experience on metalic alloys, coatings, addtivie manufacturing, surface engineering and mechanics, contact fatigue, corrsoion and finite element anaylses is a plus.
