Photomechanical coupling in photoactive nematic elastomers

Submitted by Ruobing Bai on

Dear Colleagues,

Our paper on theory of photomechanical elastomers has been published in JMPS. We explored the interplay between mechanical stress, light-induced reaction, and large deformation in photoactive nematic elastomers. You can find 50 days' free access here: https://authors.elsevier.com/c/1bceu57Zjx1Q7

Beam to surface contact dynamics using a corotational formulation and discrete SDF

Submitted by miquel.aguirre on

Please check our new article on beam to surface contact modeling, recently accepted in  Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cma.2020.113275 . We have used a previously reported dynamic corotational formulation and added frictional contact terms, which provide a fully consistent formulation.

Modeling SMA-enabled soft deployable structures for kirigami/origami reflectors

Submitted by Jinxiong Zhou on

The synergic combination of smart soft composites with kirigami/origami principles leads to self-deployable systems. To date, the development of soft deployable structures has largely been an empirical process. Focusing on the recently developed shape memory alloy (SMA)-based soft deployable structures, this paper describes an analytical model and a finite element (FE) numerical scheme to investigate deformation and deployment performance of this system.

Experimental study of Magneto-active polymers : A Comprehensive Review

Submitted by mokarram76 on

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a class of recently emerged smart materials whose moduli are largely influenced when exposed to an external magnetic field. The MREs are particulate composites, where micro-sized magnetic particles are dispersed inside a non-magnetic polymeric matrix. These elastomers are known for changing their mechanical and rheological properties in the presence of a magnetic field. This change in properties is widely known as the magnetorheological (MR) effect.
