Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the University of Oviedo (Spain). The work will be conducted in close collaboration with Imperial College London. The PhD studentship is part of the MICROROCK project, which aims at developing a new generation of micromechanics-based models for predicting rock fracture. Postdoctoral Researcher opening at Purdue – Biomechanics and fluid dynamics

We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform original research on biomechanics and fluid dynamics, with particular emphasis on interstitial flow modeling. The successful candidate will develop numerical methods to model coupled processes on high-performance computing platforms. This position is in the Gomez Research Group (https://engineering.purdue.edu/gomez/) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue. This is a one-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

Axisymmetric JKR-type adhesive contact under equibiaxial stretching

 Our research has just been published in Journal of Adhesion. It deals with axisymmetric frictionless adhesive contact problem for a spherical indenter pressed against an isotropic elastic incompressible half-space under equibiaxial stretching is studied in the framework of the generalized Johnson{Kendall{Roberts (JKR) theory, which accounts for the effect of weak coupling between fracture modes I and II by means of a phenomenological mode-mixity function. The model predicts that contact area can withstand a larger level of the substrate stretch under moderate pre-pulling force.

On incompressibility constraint and crack direction in soft solids

Most soft materials resist volumetric changes much more than shape distortions. This experimental observation led to the introduction of the incompressibility constraint in the constitutive description of soft materials. The incompressibility constraint provides analytical solutions for problems which, otherwise, could be solved numerically only. However, in the present work, we show that the enforcement of the incompressibility constraint in the analysis of failure of soft materials can lead to somewhat non- physical results.

Characterization of fracture in topology-optimized bio-inspired networks

In this paper we present a methodology for reverse engineering of trabecular bone like architectures using multi-objective topology optimization. We then investigate the mechanical properties of the resulting network structures. Specifically, we show that structures optimized according to Wolff's law alone may be stiffest but they are also fragile.
