Discussion of fracture paper #22 - Open access puts scientists in control of their own results

The last ESIS blog about how surprisingly few scientists are willing/able to share their experimental data, received an unexpectedly large interest. Directly after the publication another iMechanica blogger took the same theme but he put the focus on results produced at numerical analyses that are presented with insufficient information. While reading, my spontaneous guess was that one obstacle to do right could be the widespread use of commercial non-open codes.

Directional and oscillating residual stress on the mesoscale in additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

In this work, we were able to improve existing residual stress measurement capabilities so that we could measure smaller length scales. We were able to measure residual stresses that oscillated from build layer to build layer (0.5 mm thick) in an additively manufactured part. The oscillations persisted over nearly 30 layers!

Simulation of crack behavior of secondary particles in Li-ion battery electrodes during lithiation/de-lithiation cycles

The loss of connectivity in particle-based LiMO2 (M = Ni, Co, Al, and/or Mn) electrodes due to mechanical failure
and fracture at the interface between primary particles is one of the major causes of capacity fading in Li-ion
batteries (LIBs) after certain electrochemical cycles. In this study, a model of a secondary particle composed
of randomly distributed primary particles is established using a fractal algorithm. The finite element method
with cohesive crack modeling is employed to simulate the intraparticle fracture within the secondary particle.
