Faculty positions available at METU Northern Cyprus Campus

Submitted by Tuncay Yalcinkaya on

The Department of Aerospace Engineering at Middle East Technical University (Northern Cyprus Campus) invites applications for faculty positions to begin in 2018. Topics of interest include advanced structures and materials, aeroelasticity, aerodynamics, flight mechanics and control, advanced propulsion systems, and space applications. Outstanding candidates in other synergistic areas will be considered as well. Even though the emphasis is preferably on individuals at the Assistant Professor level, the other ranks will also be considered.

On Weingarten-Volterra defects

Submitted by Amit Acharya on

Amit Acharya

(in Journal of Elasticity)

The kinematic theory of Weingarten-Volterra line defects is revisited, both at small and fi nite deformations. Existing results are clari fied and corrected as needed, and new results are obtained. The primary focus is to understand the relationship between the disclination strength and Burgers vector of deformations containing a Weingarten-Volterra defect corresponding to di fferent cut-surfaces.

How to Realize Volume Conservation During Finite Plastic Deformation

Submitted by Bin Liu on

Volume conservation during plastic deformation is the most important feature and should be realized in elastoplastic theories. However, it is found in this paper that an elastoplastic theory is not volume conserved if it improperly sets an arbitrary plastic strain rate tensor to be deviatoric. We discuss how to rigorously realize volume conservation in finite strain regime, especially when the unloading stress free configuration is not adopted in the elastoplastic theories.

SEM 2018: Shock & Blast - Abstract deadline extended to Oct. 26

Submitted by behrad_koohbor on

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit an abstract for the ‘Shock & Blast’ session under Track 1: Dynamic Behavior of Materials. This symposium is part of the 2018 SEM Annual Conference & Exposition held at Hyatt Regency Greenville, South Carolina, USA, June 4-7, 2018. This conference marks the 75th Anniversary of SEM and will be a special meeting.

Postdoctoral Position At Northwestern University

Submitted by keten on

A postdoctoral associate position is available immediately at the Computational Nanodynamics Laboratory at Northwestern University with Prof. Sinan Keten. This research project focuses broadly on the atomistic and multi-scale modeling of biomolecular materials such as nanocellulose and their interfaces with polymers. A Ph.D. in a related field is required for this position. Expertise in atomistic and molecular modeling techniques (molecular dynamics, density functional theory, coarse-grained molecular simulations) is required. Additionally, a strong background in soft matter research (polymer science, biophysics, or related areas) is highly desired. Interested candidates should send a CV, a summary of research interests, contact information of three references, and three most relevant publications as a single pdf file to s-keten [at] northwestern.edu. Evaluations will begin immediately, and the start date is flexible.

Postdoctoral and PhD positions in Stochastic Computational Mechanics, Duke University

Submitted by jguilleminot_duke on

Several positions at the PhD and postdoctoral levels are available in the group of Prof. Guilleminot at Duke University. The ideal candidates should have a particular interest in conducting interdisciplinary research at the interface of computational mechanics, materials science and uncertainty quantification. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) stochastic modeling and computational frameworks for large-scale nonlinear materials and systems, statistical inverse problems and multiscale approaches.

IUTAM Symposium on Architectured Materials Mechanics: Call for abstracts

Submitted by Francois Barthelat on

This "Architectured Materials Mechanics" IUTAM (http://iutam.org/) Symposium will take place September 17-19, 2018 in downtown Chicago, Illinois. It aims to provide a state of the art on the engineering science (design, fabrication, mechanics) of architectured materials including (but not limited to): lattice materials, metamaterials, origami, topologically interlocked materials and bioinspired materials. The list of invited speakers can be found on the symposium website:

Mechanical Reading of Ferroelectric Polarization

Submitted by Amir Abdollahi on

The mechanical properties of materials are insensitive to space inversion, even when they are crystallographically asymmetric. In practice, this means that turning a piezoelectric crystal upside down or switching the polarization of a ferroelectric should not change its mechanical response. Strain gradients, however, introduce an additional source of asymmetry that has mechanical consequences.
