Dielectric strength: dependent or independent of stretch?

Submitted by Bo Li on

Dielectric elastomer can undergo giant deformation, but are susceptive to various failure modes. i.e electrical breakdown.

Some experimental papers (Kofod, Plante, Chen, see the attachment) reported the dielectric strength of VHB material (a kind of dielectric elastomer) under difference pre-stretch, equal bi-axially or unequal bi-axially. And the strength (maximum voltage can be applied before breakdown) has be greatly improved by these mechanical stretches.

So here comes the question: is the dielectric strength dependent or independent of stretch?

Coconuts, Blood Cells, Snail Armor - What do they have in common?

As the 2010 SIMULIA Customer Conference approaches, it reminds me of a thought-provoking presentation given by Dale Berry of SIMULIA at the 2009 SCC in London.

He reminded the audience, of engineers and researchers, that Realistic Simulation is not only good for evaluating mechanical behavior of product performance, but it’s also an indespenible tool for driving innovative research that improves our lives and society.

Mixed-Mode Fracture. Curved Crack Path

Submitted by Zhigang Suo on

These notes belong to a course on fracture mechanics

A crack pre-exists in a body. When the body is loaded, the two faces of the crack may simultaneously open and slide relative to each other. The crack is said to be under a mixed-mode condition. When the load reaches a critical level, the crack starts to grow, and usually kinks into a new direction. Subsequently the crack often grows along a curved path.

UEL CODES

Submitted by Filippo on

Hi all.

I'm Filippo, a new entry on imechenica community. I'm looking for a simple UEL code for Quad_2D-plane stress or plain strain.

Here's someone that can suggests manual or similar.

I'm grateful in advance.

regarding Abaqus

Submitted by samTF on

 hi guys

am Mr.sam doning phd in mechanical engineering, i am a new user in Abaqus i getting well with it, but i always got axcessive distortion whenever i rty to run for high strain rate probelm. if some of you kindly can give me some hinte it will be great.

 thanks in advance

How to solve global stiffness problem using FEA in Ansys?

Submitted by phamduyhai0201 on

 HI EVERY BODY!

I'm studying about composite pressure vessel type 3 (that 's with liner inside) . I use Ansys to simulate my object, but i have a problem, i can't solve stress and strain for Solid64 (global stiffness). I don't know how can combine Matlab with Ansys to solve that problem.

I hope some one have some experience in this field can help me. May be show me some simple example how to solve that problem.

swiching Nodal Result output to Integration Points in ANSYS

Submitted by saeedspace on

Hi every body

i modeled a plane with a notch with elastic-perfect plastic material. somewhere in model the stress reaches above the yield stress

so i think the reason is that ANSYS reports the nodal result output by default wish they interpolated from integration points results.

i want to see the integration points results but i dont know where to finde them.

Shape memory alloy

Submitted by adi_rvce on

In shape memory alloy, Recovery strain is the strain at the start of the martensite to austenite transformation to finish of the same transformation.if we assume the material is initially in the austenite state. is it right about wat i thought about recovery strain???
