The 2019 Franklin Institute Laureate Symposium will be held at Temple University to honor Dr. John A. Rogers who received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Materials Engineering for pioneering the engineering of flexible and stretchable electronic systems for e-health and exploratory neuroscience.

Criteria for selecting a reasonable and better measure of anisotropy

Published in Physcal Review Letters: https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.122.045502. Many materials are anisotropic. However, there is no widely accepted measure for characterizing the degree of elastic anisotropy. Here, assuming that the limiting case of extreme anisotropy should possess a positive semidefinite stiffness matrix, we propose three criteria to evaluate measures of anisotropy and show that the existing measures in the literature do not satisfy all of the proposed criteria.

Dynamics of periodically coupled parallel flexural elements: towards the modular design of metamaterial beams

Periodic systems have attracted a lot of attention in science and engineering due to the existence of band gaps in their frequency spectra. Here, we study the flexural wave propagation in beams that are periodically connected in parallel and investigate how the contrast in the material and cross-sectional properties may affect the band structure of these systems and their dispersion properties.

PhD Positions in Multiscale Modeling of Materials Under Extreme Conditions

PhD positions are open immediately in Advanced Hierarchical Materials by Design Labat Louisiana Tech Universityon multiscale modeling of materials under extreme conditions. This will be a collaborative project with MITGeorgia Tech, and Idaho National Labthat is supported by Department of Energy.  The candidates must have earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields (applicants with a MSc will be given priority) and have a solid background in theoretical and computational mechanics.
