Complicated rotor dynamic simulation with ANSYS/ABAQUS or Madyn 2000

 Rotating drum by you.

I have a system as in the Figure. There will have a radial load and a lateral load acting on the circumference of the drum which rotate at around 1000 rpm. I want to investigate the stability of the shaft at this speed. Can ANSYS or ABAQUS simulate this kind of dynamic simulation or is there any other software can solve my problem.

Hi,

 

You can simulate that in ANSYS using the ANSYS's rotor dynamics modeling capability. First u need to work hard in understanding the basics as Rotor dynamics is comparably harder to simulate. But built-in elements are there in ansys for rotor dynamics modeling.

Fig 2 by you.

I can see the "rotor dynamic" analysis capability of ANSYS 11.0. However, in the tutorial vm247, they use 3-D beam elements which are represented by 2 nodes, NOT a real 3-D structure. Since then how can I define the lateral load and radial load as in the Fig. 2

Hi,

 

You can sort out this with smart modeling approasch. Create nodes at the locations where you need to apply loads.Connect them with shaft(beam)/bearing elements. Then apply loads at the corresponding nodal locations. While modeling you have to take one direction as Radial, one as Axial and other as Tangetianl. Say X-radial, Y-Axial, & Z-tangetial...So radial load means FX at the node, lateral load means FY at the node. Its as simple as that.

Do you have access to Ansys Workbench. It could help you construct and simulate using 3D models.

In Ansys Workbench, we can only define "cylindrical support" for "bearing connections" but cannot take into account for the bearing characteristics (spring contanst, damping) as in "rotor dynamic analysis" in ANSYS. It is regarded as an ideal connection there. Do you have any hint to solve this problem for Workbench ?

I am not familiar with your analysis, but I guess, you will be able to include a couple of lines of APDL script into the workbench for your purpose for defining the damping and stiffness parameters. If you read on the named selections, and then on the use of snippets in workbench, you could set your model as you wanted.

I heard Madyn 2000 is a specific software for rotordynamic analysis. Does anybody know where can I find a Trial version of this program ?
