Group Leader or Senior Post Doctorate position in Mechanism-Based Modeling and Simulation

INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials, Saarbrücken, is a basic and applied research institute in transition to new scientific fields. It has approximately 180 employees, excellent research equipment, and is well supported by public and third-party funding. Its traditional focus is chemical nanotechnology, where the institute holds key patents and has close international links to industry. Under new leadership, this focus is now expanding to include promising novel aspects of materials science, physics and biology.

To complement the existing experimental groups, a new research group is being established in the area of mechanism-based modeling and simulation to support the activities of the institute. For this group, we seek to appoint a

Group Leader
(Mechanism-Based Modeling and Simulation)

The successful candidate will carry out mechanism based modeling and computational simulation in the area of micromechanical or nanomechanical continuum material behavior, preferably in collaborations with other researchers at INM. Current research areas range from functional surfaces (tribological, adhesive, corrosive, …), glass and optics (refractive index engineering, light management), metallic microstructures in bulk and thin films (processing, micromechanics), nanotribology and surface materials (AFM methods, CVD/PVD coatings), structure formation at small scales (colloidal superstructures, polymers) to biomineralization, life science and nanotoxicity

The person hired will have completed the equivalent of a Ph.D. in a relevant field. Experience in continuum based methods of numerical simulation, informed by nanoscopic, microscopic or mesoscopic mechanisms of materials behavior is required. He or she will have plans to perform computational research to have an impact at a fundamental level on the nanomechanics and micromechanics aspects of new materials systems of interest within INM. The ability and willingness to communicate and collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary environment are essential. The research conducted must be published in high-quality reviewed journals of international standing; the successful candidate will have demonstrated this ability in the form of some published work.

The new group will be provided substantial support from the institute’s equipment resources in the form of a newly developed computational facility.

INM offers a creative working environment and the inspiring atmosphere of an institution in transition. Financial compensation will be competitive and depends on previous research experience. Links with the adjacent Saarland University are strongly encouraged. Numerous connections with industrial partners will also provide additional career opportunities. Saarbrücken is a lively city on the German-French border with fast connections into both countries.

INM promotes career opportunities for female scientists, who are encouraged to apply.

Please address your application including a CV and a publication list to Professor Eduard Arzt, Scientific Director and Chairman, INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials, Campus D2 2, 66123 Saarbrücken, Germany, eduard.arzt@inm-gmbh.de
