Department Description

The Mechanics of Materials Department performs experimental and analytical studies to characterize and predict the thermal-mechanical behavior of materials, from atoms to continuum, specializing in fracture and failure. Our experimental work covers the spectrum of discovery to characterization to model validation. Motivated by observations, we develop mathematical models to simulate material responses under various loading and environmental conditions. The fidelity of our models and simulations varies from atomic to continuum scales. We develop numerical methodologies so that our material models can be implemented in high-performance computing simulations. Our experimental capabilities include characterizing materials over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates, developing micro- and nanoscale strain and displacement diagnostics, and testing subsystems to support model validations.

Job Description

Postdoctoral Appointee

Job Summary

The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

Primary Job Duties

A postdoctoral position is available for an applied mechanics engineer with a strong background in computational constitutive model development. The work will support our current projects in the areas of continuum plasticity and failure modeling. The engineer will be expected to implement models into Sandia computer codes for high-performance computing simulations. In addition, the successful candidate will collaborate with structural analysts to apply these advanced models to Sandia applications.

  • Ph.D. in engineering mechanics, mechanical engineering, or a related field with an emphasis in solid mechanics.
  • Experience in constitutive model development, including large-deformation plasticity and damage mechanics.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q security clearance.

  • Knowledge of materials science;
  • Familiarity with the fundamental components of the finite element method;
  • Familiarity with applied mathematics and numerical analysis; and
  • Familiarity with C++ programming, or a desire to learn.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.

Sandia National Laboratories is an Equal Opportunity Employer of qualified women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.
