How large is large?

Submitted by Mac_Mechanics on

Good day,

Whenever we define large displacement and large rotation, for general engineering people, how do we define how large is a displacement and rotation must be to consider them large?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

RPM

In my view, when the results achieved using infinitesimal (or small) displacements are not anymore within the tolerance that the user can accept, it becomes a large displacement problem.

Thank you for your reply.  I believe that whenever we present our research to people who do the same field of study, they somehow understand easily the point that we want to convey.  For the general engineering audience, however, we must somehow explain philosophically the point of our research.  Would you think that a simple example problem would suffice their curiosity?
