Postdoc position: Microstructure simulations for a systematic mechanism-based development of thermo-shock resistant materials.

The Chair of Material and Process Simulation at the University of Bayreuth is inviting applicants for a post-doctoral position available within the project "Microstructure simulations for a systematic mechanism-based development of thermo-shock resistant materials with reduced carbon amount", which is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for a period of eight months – with the prospect of prolongation for further two years.

If you are interested in developing your scientific skills within industry and government supported projects towards industrially relevant questions, we can offer you an interesting environment in the field of computer aided materials design implemented in a top-level research framework. Our dynamic team consists of international multidisciplinary scientists and staff members, which cover a wide range from the basic concepts of physical modelling, implementation via enhanced methods of scientific supercomputing to industrially relevant questions of simulation based material design. This involves developing, implementing, and applying models at different scales, such as ab-initio, molecular, phase-field, and FEM models.

The aim of this project plan is, to make a contribution to work out materials- and process engineering concepts for microstructure development respectively dimensioning of refractory components for high temperature applications. The concepts, based on microstructure modelling and –simulation, should lead to “cleaner, slenderer and cleverer” refractory components. In particular, the project should allow an appropriate selection of material- and process leading parameters for the development of refractory materials with regard to optimal mechanical properties of tailor-made microstructures in the future. Applicants must have a PhD degree in a relevant field and perform the documented ability of a novel research platform. You should have basic experience in modeling and simulation, or in related fields in mathematics, material sciences, physics / chemistry / biology or mechanical, respectively civil engineering. They should also have experience in thermodynamic calculations. Applicants with an outstanding research record in the desired fields are welcome. We encourage especially young scientists who have recently completed their doctoral degree.
