Dr. Stelios Kyriakides’ election to the United States National Academy of Engineering
Please joint me in congratulating Dr. Stelios Kyriakides’ (Editor of International Journal of Solids and Structures) for his election to the United States National Academy of Engineering.
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to the "pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education. Dr. Kyriakides was elected for “contributions to understanding of propagating instability phenomena in structures and materials and its use for technological applications.”
Dr. Stelios Kyriakides earned his Ph.D. in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology in 1980. He joined the Department of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics of The University of Texas at Austin that same year. He is director of the Center for Research in Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Materials.

propagation of instability in structures
Congratulations. His several papers on the propagation of instability in structures are really interesting.
His PhD work was on the propagating buckle and its arrest.
In the presence of sufficiently large external pressure, an offshore pipeline buckle initiates and propagates, until encounters a region of low pressure or an arresting device.
Congratulations to Stelios Kyriakides
Dear Stellios:
Congratulations on your election to NAE. Your devotion to research of lasting value and to the service of the community have been truly inspiring. It has always been a pleasure to listen to you presenting your work, in your understated way. It is enviable that you and your colleagues have built a wonderful solid mechanics group at Austin.
I am grateful to you for your encouragement and advice in the last few years, and for giving me a lucky break when I was a relatively young faculty member.
Thank you and congratulations again.
