Doctoral Studentship in high strain rate properties of Nickel Alloys
The Department of Engineering Science at Oxford University has recently obtained an iCASE studentship funded by EPSRC and Rolls-Royce plc to perform research into the mechanical behaviour of metals at high temperatures and high strain rates. The studentship provides full funding (fees and stipend) at the home / EU level for 3.5 years.
The project will investigate the behaviour of Nickel Superalloys. In addition to a recently developed high temperature high strain rate testing system, the project will also benefit from a major investment in thermo-mechanical testing capability which is planned over the next six months, and state of the art facilities for microstructural characterisation. By investigating both the effect of microstructure on the rate and temperature dependence, and also the evolution of microstructure under high rate and high temperature loading, we will build a unique understanding of how these alloys behave under these conditions. Characterisation data will also be obtained, which can be used with appropriate constitutive models to improve our ability to model a number of industrial processes.
