Submitted by mechse-faculty… on

The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions. While excellent candidates will be considered in all areas related to mechanical science and engineering, specific emphasis will be placed on the following research areas: manufacturing and materials processing; experimental fluids; mechatronics and robotics; and computational sciences.   Successful candidates are expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, establish and maintain an active research program, and provide service to the department, the university, and the profession.

The department has top-ranked graduate and undergraduate programs. Our faculty and students have access to world-class interdisciplinary opportunities, including extensive state-of-the-art facilities housed on campus. These facilities include the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, the Beckman Institute, the Coordinated Science Laboratory, the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Carver Biotechnology Laboratory and the Institute for Genomic Biology. Information about the department can be found at http://mechanical.illinois.edu/.

We seek candidates with outstanding experimental, analytical or computational research backgrounds. Computational candidates may qualify for appointments as Blue Waters Professors and will be provided substantial allocations on and expedited access to the Blue Waters supercomputer. Blue Waters is one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, supported by the National Science Foundation and developed and run by the University of Illinois’ National Center for Supercomputing Applications. If you are interested in being considered for this unique opportunity, be sure to include Blue Waters as one of your preferred research areas when prompted during your online application process and include a reference to Blue Waters in your cover letter.

Senior qualified candidates may also be considered for tenured full professor positions as part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative, which is backed by a $100-million gift from the Grainger Foundation. More information regarding this unique opportunity can be found at http://graingerinitiative.engineering.illinois.edu.

A doctoral degree is required, and salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full consideration will be given to applications received by December 31, 2014. Applications received after that date may be considered until positions are filled. Interviews may take place before the given date; however, no decisions will be made until after that time. The positions could start as soon as January 2015.

Applicants should create a candidate profile at http://jobs.illinois.edu.  A complete application includes curriculum vitae, teaching and research statements, cover letter, and the names and contact information of four references. Applicants should submit this information in .pdf format. All requested information must be submitted for an application to be considered.
