Funded PhD in Aerodynamics of Low-Density Micro-Lattice Material

Szyniszewski Stefan's picture

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship fully funded by the EU research project. The position is for a three-year research program leading to the PhD degree.

The PhD research projects aims are (i) to understand, at a fundamental level, the effect of low-density, micro-lattice skin on flow regularization over a bluff body, (ii) explore ways to reduce: drag, and how to reduce turbulence induced vibrations.
The project explores applications of specially designed architecture for flow enhancement over a range of practical applications such as unmanned aircraft, landing gears, wind turbine blades, oil and gas pipelines. Thus, it offers an excellent path to future employment at one of high-tech, high-value manufacturing companies or an accelerated academic career at a top university.

Person Specification: You will have an inquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. The enjoyment of discovery and risk-taking will also be helpful.

Applicants should have:
•    First class (or equivalent) university degree,
•    Background in Fluid Mechanics or a related field,
•    Preferably practical experience in aerodynamic and testing systems as well as CFD simulations.

This project offers an excellent opportunity to join a vibrant research group and to develop/learn computational fluid mechanics with a focus on novel porous materials that were developed for extreme applications.

The successful candidate will join the Multi-Physical Materials Research Group and will work closely with the Environmental Flow Research Center (EnFlo) lab. EnFlo facilities are one of the best equipped in the UK, with a range of wind tunnels and state-of-the-art equipment. The University of Surrey is a top 10 university in the UK, according to the Guardian League Table 2015. It is located in the sought after town of Guildford, with fast train connection (40 min) to central London. University of Surrey has a vibrant student community and offers stimulating, academic environment.

The Award: The scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of £15,000 per year and UK/EU tuition fees. The European Commission funds this studentship. This scholarship can be awarded to an overseas-fee paying student if other sources fund the fee difference between the EU and overseas fee. The studentship is for three years starting in October 2015.

How to apply:
Please send your application to Dr. Stefan Szyniszewski: s.szyniszewski@surrey.ac.uk
The application shall include:  1) covering letter (max 1 page) that explains how you satisfy project requirements;  2) detailed CV;  3) selected published work such as your journal and conference articles, copy of your MSc or BEng dissertations;  4) a copy of your current academic transcript; 5) names and contact information of at least two referees. You may also want to include copies of your awards and language certificates in order to enhance your application.

Please quote EU/SmoothFlow in your email subject and application.

Questions:  Dr Stefan Szyniszewski will supervise this studentship. Informal inquiries prior to making an application may be addressed to  s.szyniszewski@surrey.ac.uk. Further information can be found at http://www.szyniszewski.com/2015/04/13/aerodynamics-of-micro-lattice-mat...
Closing date: 30 July 2015 (with interviews starting in May). However, applications will be accepted until the position is closed.
