PhD student in Numerical modelling of fretting fatigue crack propagation

  • Last application date: 1st of February 2016

  • Department: Soete Laboratory

  • Contract type: Limited duration (4 years)

  • Occupancy rate: 100%

  • Vacancy type: Research staff

One PhD studentship position is available at Soete Laboratory - Ghent University, Belgium.

The research project is related to numerical modelling of fretting fatigue crack propagation. Although the project concentrates on finite element analysis and numerical techniques, some experimental tests will be considered for validation of the numerical tools.

Project description:

Fretting fatigue is a phenomenon, in which two contact surfaces undergo a small relative oscillatory motion due to cyclic loading. Failure in mechanical components due to fretting fatigue has been reported and investigated in depth in literature, e.g. aerospace riveted joints and aeroengine splined couplings. The fraction of fretting fatigue lifetime spent in crack initiation and in crack propagation is application and parameter dependent, but a clear conclusion from previous research is that both crack initiation and propagation phases are important in analysing fretting fatigue. However, this PhD studentship will concentrate only on fretting fatigue crack propagation.

Profile:

  • Master degree in Materials, Civil, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree.

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (ABAQUS).

  • Fluent in English and programming languages.

Scholarship Salary:

The value of the scholarship at Ghent University depends on, a.o., the researcher’s family situation.
