Open position (PhD or Postdoc level) in the field of Computational Materials Science at Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, Düsseldorf

The position is part of the project “Electro-plastic deformation of Al-Cu eutectic alloys” within the priority programme “Manipulation of Matter Controlled by Electric and Magnetic Fields: Towards Novel Synthesis and Processing Routes of Inorganic Materials” (SPP 1959).

The aim of this project is to unravel the underlying mechanisms facilitating enhanced plasticity during electro-mechanical deformation in otherwise brittle materials. A complementary experimental and theoretical investigation of the electro-mechanical deformation behaviour of Al-Cu eutectic alloys will be performed. The candidate will be responsible for developing a constitutive theory for electro-plasticity within a crystal plasticity framework, incorporating factors such as electron wind forces, joule heating and thermal effects; computational implementation within the flexible simulation toolkit DAMASK; and performing multi-physics simulations to study the electro-mechanical deformation mechanisms in relation to the underlying microstructure of the Al-Cu alloys

The candidate should have a PhD/MSc degree in materials science or physics as well as a solid educational background in physical metallurgy or solid state physics. Programming skills are beneficial. Excellent English skills are mandatory. We are an equal-opportunity employer. We offer an outstanding research environment for highly ambitious scientists who want to perform cutting-edge research. The salary is determined by the TVöD, level 13. For more details on this position and research topic please contact Dr. Pratheek Shanthraj. Applications containing a CV, a list of publications, two samples of scientific work (e.g. papers or theses), degree certificates and transcripts (including grade scale) and at least two letters of reference from previous supervisors should be sent in pdf form to bewerbungskennziff.2011@mpie.de. Please note that we can only process complete applications.
