Postdoc in Wind Turbine Drivetrain Bearing Design

The Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind Energy) has an open 2-year postdoctoral position in the area of Wind turbine drivetrain dynamics and gearbox bearing load computations with a focus in multi-body simulations and life prediction under White Etching Cracks.

DTU Wind Energy is a mission-driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector. The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.

The position is in the section Wind Turbine Structures and Components Design (SAC) at DTU Wind Energy.

Responsibilities and tasks
This position requires the candidate to be able to investigate different types of bearing configurations on wind turbine drivetrains as part of a multi-body simulation coupled to the wind turbine to assess gearbox bearing roller loads and slippage. The simulated loads will need to be validated with acquired turbine load measurements at points on the drivetrain and also as input to laboratory tests that show the development of white etching cracks on bearings. Based on relevant criteria, a life prediction model for bearings needs to be developed.

Qualifications
A PhD in mechanical engineering or a similar discipline is required. Applicants should have excellent analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards the research goals. Good knowledge of at least one mechanical design software package is expected. A strong computational mechanics background is required along with a background in one or more of the following disciplines:

  • Structural mechanics
  • Multi-body dynamics
  • Wind turbine loads prediction
  • Reliability

In addition, strong communication and presentation skills are required to effectively communicate research findings, as well as a good knowledge of technical English writing.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.

The workplace is DTU Wind Energy at DTU Risø campus close to Roskilde.
