1 Postdoctoral Position on Theoretical/Computational Biomechanics of Soft Tissue Cutting, Deformation, Damage, and Fracture @ University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

1 postdoctoral position is open for a research project related to biological and bioinspired mechanics of cutting of soft materials, damage-induced fracture, and (active) deformation. The postdoc position is under the supervision of Prof. Mattia Bacca in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UBC, Vancouver – Canada. It is funded by the Human Frontiers in Science Program, in collaboration with the Bioengineering Department at Imperial College London and the Department of Ecology at the University of California.

We are seeking individuals with strong analytical and computational skills and experience in theoretical and applied solid mechanics at large deformation, hyperelasticity, and elastoplasticity. Experience in the following is an asset to the project: damage evolution, finite element analysis (FEA), adaptive meshing, mesh-free methods, etc. The candidate is expected to be able to use commercial software as well as coding subroutines and own computational tools.

The project involves theoretical modeling and numerical simulation of the mechanism of cutting of soft biological materials and tissue done by natural blades and needles. It also involves the description of damage-induced fracture and active deformation of materials (muscle activation mechanics). The mathematical and computational models will be based on fracture mechanics at large deformation, damage mechanics, and plasticity. The theoretical prediction will be compared against experiments done at Imperial College and UC to seek validation. Some experiments might be performed by the candidate at UBC.

UBC, Vancouver, is one of the 3 best universities in Canada, and among the top 50 universities in the world (topuniversities.com). It is located in Vancouver, the largest city in beautiful British Columbia, and the 5th most livable city in the world (Wikipedia).

The positions will be filled as soon as possible, with the ideal starting period of Fall 2022, but a later start can be negotiated.

The position is funded for 1 year and will be renewed for another year based on funding availability and research progress.

Interested candidates should send an email to Prof. Mattia Bacca (mbacca@mech.ubc.ca):

1.     Indicate “iMechanica postdoc position on Cutting Biomechanics” in the object of the email;

Attach:

2.     A detailed CV in .pdf;

3.     A sample of publication;

4.     Contact information of 3 academic references (either in the CV or in the body of the email);

5.     A brief (maximum 5 lines) statement of interest (it can be simply in the body of the email, or as a separate attachment);
