Open Faculty Positons:

Open Faculty Position in Computational Mechanics

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Arizona State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of computational mechanics. The appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments and can be at the assistant, associate or full professor rank, beginning August 2007. At the time of appointment, candidates must have an earned doctorate in engineering or a related field.

Specific duties include the development of a nationally recognized and externally funded research program, graduate and undergraduate teaching and advisement, and service activities. Areas of interest include high-performance computational modeling of non-linear, multi-scale or multi-physics phenomena with special interests in computational biomechanics including transport phenomena in biological systems, complex fluids, or nanomechanics. The successful candidate will use computational methods as a means of understanding physical phenomena and complex system; candidates making outstanding contributions will be considered with higher priority given to the overall innovation, originality, and promise of the candidate’s work than to any specific sub-area of research.

The position leverages growing strength in ASU’s Fulton School of Engineering in computationally-based engineering, including the Ira A. Fulton High Performance Computing Initiative which provides computing infrastructure supporting both large central computing facilities, distributed satellite computer clusters, and very large-scale storage. Required qualifications include demonstrated evidence of research capability and demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank. Desired qualifications include demonstrated ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary research initiatives.

Review of applications will begin December 1, 2006 and will continue until the search is concluded. Mail a cover letter, detailed résumé, brief statement of research and teaching interests, and contact information (name, address and telephone number) for three professional references to:

Open Faculty Position in Multiscale Environmental Fluid Dynamics

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Arizona State University has a faculty position open in the area of multiscale environmental fluid dynamics. The appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments and can be at the assistant, associate or full professor rank, beginning August 2007. An earned doctorate in engineering or related fields is required.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized and externally funded research program delving into a variety of environmental (oceanic and/or atmospheric) flow scales and their interactions using state-of-the-art experimental and/or modeling approaches, including effective use of sensor and satellite data platforms. Experience with research on large scale flows is desired. Other duties include graduate and undergraduate teaching and advisement, and service activities.

The position is grounded in potentially strong interdisciplinary collaborations with existing research and academic entities at ASU that the candidate is expected to engage, including the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Program, School of Earth and Space Exploration and Global Institute of Sustainability. Candidates are also expected to explore linkages with ASU’s Ira A. Fulton High Performance Computing Initiative. Required qualifications include demonstrated evidence of research capability appropriate to rank and demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence appropriate to the candidate’s rank. Desired qualifications include demonstrated ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary research initiatives.
