Automatic failed element removal

Hi every one,
I think that there is a method for automatic failed element removal using UMAT subroutine, I mean that at every iteriation failed elements with the help of a failure criterion to be indicated and to its material behaviour to set to zero and this means that a path for crack propagation will form .... Anyway, if any body is intrested we can clarify this subroutine step by step for all of the visitors in this website, I mean that an open source subroutine to be expanded here.
Thank you,

Automatic failed element removal
Hi,
I am excited about subroutine which can automatically remove failed elements with the help of failure criterion. I think you are discussing about Abaqus subroutine (UMAT). I m using brittle cracking model and cohesive elements as well available in Abaqus where there is an option to select element deletion whcih according to my understanding removal of element when they reach defined failure criterion but I could not see any removed elements in mesh even they are gettng distorted.
However it seems available option in Abaqus is not working for removing failed elements if we can have a subroutine for removing failed elements is really useful.
Regards
