Solid mechanician and Caltech Faculty Member Named to American Academy of Arts and Sciences: Caltech professor Ares Rosakis, is among the 210 new fellows elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences this year. They join an assembly that was founded in 1780 by John Adams, James Bowdoin, John Hancock, and other scholars to provide practical solutions to pressing issues.
Ares Rosakis, the Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, earned his BSc from the University of Oxford and his ScM and PhD from Brown University. He joined the Caltech faculty in 1982, and since 2004, he has served as director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories (GALCIT). Beginning May 1 of this year, he serves as Chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science.
"Since 1780, the academy has served the public good by convening leading thinkers and doers from diverse perspectives to provide practical policy solutions to the pressing issues of the day," said AAAS chair and CEO Leslie Berlowitz. "I look forward to welcoming into the academy these new members to help continue that tradition."
"These remarkable men and women have made singular contributions to their fields, and to the world," said academy president Emilio Bizzi. "By electing them as members, the academy honors them and their work, and they, in turn, honor us."
The new class will be inducted at a ceremony on October 10 at the academy's headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
