Simpleware will be running a series of free workshops in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne from March 23rd to April 1st 2015

These will include an overview of using the software to visualise, analyse, process and generate models from 3D image data (MRI, CT, micro-CT...). Learn how to obtain very high quality models from image data, how to integrate CAD objects with images, how to calculate effective material properties using Finite Element-based homogenisation techniques, and about exporting robust FE and CFD meshes for simulation in other software.

Stress corrosion cracks can be a serious problem in many engineering industries, and especially so for critical parts. While an ultrasonic transducer can be used for the non-destructive evaluation of cracks with simple shapes, complex branching cracks, such as stress corrosion cracks, require ultrasonic arrays that consist of multiple transducers and are able to inspect at multiple angles.

Biofilms represent bacterial communities that attach to implanted medical devices such as sutures and catheters. When detached from implants within the body, biofilms can cause chronic infections. This study used Simpleware software to generate image-based microscopic Finite Element (FE) models from confocal laser scanning microscopy scans of real biofilm colonies attached to a surgical suture fragment.

The latest release of Simpleware’s 3D image processing and model generation software includes new features designed to enhance visualisation, analysis and segmentation of 3D image data. Features include a particles analyser, centreline tools and new physics modules for calculating effective material properties using homogenisation techniques. 

In this case study, based on work carried out at Imperial College and University College London, research was carried out into the performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The microstructure of an SOFC electrode was obtained using FIB tomography, and a volume mesh generated in Simpleware software, with the model then exported to Abaqus CAE. Boundary conditions were set in the solver and stress analysis conducted, which were able to approxiamte peak maximum principal stresses in response to thermal expansion.

We'd like to share a recent publication based on our software, which converts 3D volumetric image data into computational models; this article, published in partnership with MSC Technology, highlights how we've been able to produce successful FE models for biomedical implant design.
