Welcome to the February 2009 issue. In this issue, we will discuss the use of finite elements (FEs) in quantum mechanics, with specific focus on the quantum-mechanical problem that arises in crystalline solids. We will consider the electronic structure theory based on the Kohn-Sham equations of density functional theory (KS-DFT): in real-space, Schrödinger and Poisson equations are solved in a parallelepiped unit cell with Bloch-periodic and periodic boundary conditions, respectively.

Viscoelastic Cooling -- Residual Stresses

Hi,

I am trying to cool glass (viscoelastic material model) from its
transition temperature to a specific temperature near its annealing
temperature by gradual cooling, by specifying the cooling rate. I want
to estimate the residual stresses as a result.

I am not clear as to how to specify the problem in ANSYS. For ex,
if I want to cool from 500 C (which is also my reference temperature)
to 200 C at the rate of 2C/sec, then how do I specify the cooling rate
and the end temperature in ANSYS?

poisson effect

When we have stress, say in x direction, due to poisson effect, we get strain in y and z directions.

What is the reason that associated stress does not develop due to this strain in y and z directions? Is it due to the fact that there is no restraint to this strain, something similar to when free thermal expansion does not result in stress?

Dear researchers.

I am trying to start studying HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) absorption mechanisms and modeling methods, specially for clinical applications(absorption in tissue). But I cant find any straightforward article in this field.Would you please help me on this.

With great Thanks.

Need help in executing ANSYS subroutine userpr

Submitted by samueltcw on

Dear all

I need help in executing ANSYS user programmable feature (UPF), specifically subroutine userpr (changing element pressure information) for my 2D model. I have read the manual but don't understand the subroutine program structure (attached below). Can someone kindly explain how can I activate and run the subroutine?

Thanks,

Samuel
