Intro

MIT Short Course: Machine Learning for Materials Informatics (Live Virtual, Sept. 26-29, 2022)

Submitted by Markus J. Buehler on

In this course you will fully learn how to incorporate new materials informatics methods into your own material modeling, analysis and design processes in order to capitalize on recent AI breakthroughs, such as language models (e.g. GPT-3, BERT, LaMDA, etc.), DNA and protein models (e.g., AlphaFold), graph neural networks applied from molecular to macroscale structures, and a host of methods adapted for computer vision including diffusion models (as used in DALL-E 2 or Imagen), specifically for the analysis, design and modeling of materials. The course involves a mix of lectures, hands-on labs and clinics for an immersive experience. Participants will learn fundamentals and techniques to deploy machine learning in materials development and gain first-hand understanding of state-of-the art tools for varied applications ranging from data mining to inverse design. We will cover scales from the molecular to the continuum.

Article: Hydrodynamic Interaction Between Two Flexible Finite Length Coaxial Cylinders: New Theoretical Formulation and Numerical Validation

Submitted by lagrangr on

This article addresses the interaction of two coaxial cylinders separated by a thin fluid layer. The cylinders are flexible, have a finite length, and are subject to a vibration mode of an Euler–Bernoulli beam. Assuming a narrow channel, an inviscid and linear theoretical approach is carried out, leading to a new simple and tractable analytical expression of the fluid forces.

PhD positions at The University of Texas at Austin – Mechanical Metamaterials and Advanced Structures

Submitted by Yunlan Emma Zhang on

Dr Yunlan Zhang has two funded PhD positions in structural engineering at the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, focusing on mechanical metamaterials and advanced structures: computational modelling, additive manufacturing, and experimental testing. Students who are interested in developing innovative materials and structures are invited to apply to join my Lab.

Deadline Oct 15th, 2022: Call for Nominations for the Eshelby Mechanics Award for Young Faculty

Submitted by Pradeep Sharma on

It is my pleasure to solicit nominations for the "Eshelby Mechanics Award for Young Faculty". This award, launched in 2012, is given annually to rapidly emerging junior faculty who exemplify the creative use and development of mechanics. The intent of the award is to promote the field of mechanics, especially among young researchers. While interdisciplinary work that bridges mechanics with physics, chemistry, biology and other disciplines is encouraged, the ideal awardee will demonstrate clear inspiration from mechanics in his/her research.
