PhD in experimental mechanics of 3D printed materials @ Ghent University (Belgium)
The approved research project is a collaboration between the companies V!go, Materialise, Devan and Ghent University. It is a feasibility study for 3D printed orthoses, that can be 3D printed and thus tailor-made for every patient. An orthosis (plural: orthoses) is "an externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system".
Geometry, topology, and solid mechanics
Differential geometry in simple words is a generalization of calculus on some curved spaces called manifolds. An n-manifold is a space that locally looks like R^n but globally can be very different. The first significant application of differential geometry happened to be in Einstein’s theory of general relativity.
Simpleware Case Study: Vertebral Endplate Morphology and Permeability
This study used Simpleware software and ANSYS Fluent to investigate the transport properties of the bony endplate (BEP). Understanding the BEP is important when considering fluid and nutrient exchanges between vertebra and intervertebral discs (IVDs. uCT and CFD were combined to evaluate the 3D microstructure and resistance to fluid flow of the BEP, resulting in a calculation of tissue permeability. The results demonstrated the value of image-based modelling and CFD for analysis of complex processes within the human body.

8th GRACM International Congress on Mechanics, Volos, Greece, 12-15 July 2015
Dear colleagues,
Τhe Greek Association of Computational Mechanics (GRACM) in association with the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments of the University of Thessaly will organize the 8th GRACM conference in a series of congresses in the area of computational mechanics. The conference will be held between the 12th and 15th of July 2015 in the facilities of the University of Thessaly in Volos which is the host city of most of its academic departments.
New shear lock free finite elements with arbitrary higher order derivative
A set of highly efficient and shear lock free finite elements based on Timoshenko beam and Reissner-Mindlin plate theories has been developed for the analysis of thin and thick structures. These elements have arbitrary higher order derivatives and do not require any spcial integration scheme. All are isoparametric elements.

Truss Me! It’s great for learning
In a large "Mechanics of Materials" class at ETH Zurich, I incorporated an educational game, Truss Me!, into the class. It showed the potential gaming apps have in enhancing traditional teaching of mechanics.
