Hi I am seeking career advice. I am 31 and looking forward to working professionally on FEM and computational mechanics. When I finished my Meng Mechanical Engineering back in 2005 I worked at an institute (unpaid) and programmed some codes on discrete element method but shortly found a job in a oil engineering company in their stress analysis department. Unfortunately I was never placed in that department because the company had other needs (I was placed in the Material Department as a senior Material engineer)

I have to use Hamilton pricinple to evaluate the diff. equation of motion of a string. As shown in the figure below, the string is hanged from one end and is free at the other. The flexural stiffness of the string is negligible.
I have a problem with the potential energy of the string! required in the Hamilton principle. Since the flexural stiffness of the string is assumed to be negligible, is there any other term for potential energy?

I have modelled a beam with a sharp edge at the corner of a rectangular hole with ABAQUS. I have introduced different crack length and using LEFM, I have made some predictions for the failure load of the beam. Now the predicted load is dependent on the crack length. How can I chooose the right crack length?

I have always, and I believe correctly, considered cohesize/bridging models linear elasticity. This is because whether we apply them to holes or cracks, we are solving the equations of ELASTICITY, with nonlinear boundary conditions along the part(s) of the crack along which a traction-separation law is applied. So the material model is totally elastic. All we did was to augment the elasticity theory with an ad hoc physical condition (inspired by experiments such as Dugdale).
