Complementary strain energy - Non-linearity

Submitted by ramdas chennamsetti on

Hi all!

I read that the "cmplementary starin energy of a structure is not equal to sum of the complementary strain energies of it's components, if there is non-linearity like geometric"

That means for e.g. if I consider a truss stucture subjected to loading so that it undergoes geometric non-linearity, then the sum of the complementary strain energies from members is not equal to complementary strain energy of the structure.

I request somebody to explain why is it so??

 Thanks and regards,

- Ramdas

any theories on the stress wave propagation in concrete?

Submitted by xuhao on

does anyone know any current theories on the stress wave propagation in a  complex media(such as concrete or rock).(1D sphere wave or complex)

all i see is the simulation with a complex constitutive model. but i think it`s not perfect.

hope for your help

ES 240 project: Sloshing of a liquid in a cylindrical tank

Submitted by Pawel Zimoch on

Although this is a class in solid mechanics, I chose a project which focuses on fluid dynamics. I did this because I think this project will be very educational with respect to the Finite Element Analysis and mechanics in general.

Description for ABAQUS Assignment

Submitted by John M. Kolinski on

For my semester project, I will investigate equilibrium geometries of ripples in an elastic sheet. In order to do so, I will need to learn how to study out of plane bending of a thin membrane with ABAQUS. The project can be divided into the following stages:

1. Set up the membrane geometry model in ABAQUS

2. Apply relevant boundary conditions and tractions

3. Set up the job

4. Run the job, and post-process
