The Fundamental Physical Bases of the WR Approach (and, Consequently, of FEM) in General

It has been quite some time (more than 1.5 years) that I had touched upon the topic of the physical bases of FEM in general, and of the general weighted residual (WR) approach in particular, at iMechanica (see here).

The position I then took was that there is no known physical basis at all for the WR approach---despite its loving portrayals in mathematical terms, or its popularity.

Cracking growth prediction for a structure with creep and plasticity deformation

My question is how we can predict the crack growth rate and direction for a structure under cyclic loading in such a way that both plasticity and creep has been built in it.

Composite Beams

I am working on FE Modelling of Composite hollow rectangular section beam in Ansys. When I select beam 188 element, there is no need of inputting real constants. Where do i put the initial values in pre-processing????Pls do help me,,I am new to applying Composite material in Ansys.....pls...

diffuse and localized bifurcation modes of incompressible material

Does anyone know if it is possible for diffuse and localized bifurcation to happen simontanously in a incompressible slab? If so, which one is more likely to occur first?

Why do we often use Jaumann rate instead of Truesdell rate?

In the attachment, we show that Truesdell rate can by simplified to Green-Naghdi rate by assuming F .=. R and can be further simplified to Jaumann rate by assuming W .=. R(.)R(T), where .=. means approximately equal

TWO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FACULTY POSITIONS IN CHILE

The University of Chile invites applications for two full time faculty positions in Mechanical Engineering. Applicants must have deep interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as the purpose to conduct long term, externally funded research programs at international level. Candidates are also expected to maintain fruitful work relationships with industry in their respective areas. According to qualifications, they may be ranked at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Candidates are sought in two areas:

  1. Energy: Research interests in conventional or alternative energies, with emphasis in energy conservation, generation or efficient use.

Simulation of Metal cutting using Abaqus

Hi,

I am a research scholar. I want to carryout my research work on metal cutting. Pls let me know how can I start working with ABAQUS to get the simulation of metal cutting.

Elasto-plastic theory - ABAQUS

Hello,

I have started to study the plasticity theory few months ago. I'm trying to do one exercise in plane strain of one elasto-plastic material in ABAQUS and manually.

When the load is small, the material has just deformed elasticly and the total and elastic strain in z-direction (E33 and EE33) are zero (like say the theory of plane strain).

nonlinear buckling of plates

hi all,

thanks lot, actually how to solve nonlinear buckling analysis?

1.what is the adavantage of nonlinear analysis, will u get new critical load or same value of linear buckling load?

2.one of the imechanica member suggested the follwing code,i done using tha t code but what ever im giving time value same value getting after converging my solution.

Here is the code that I used to perform the analysis:

描述

Please give me some insight to develop crack bridging user element in Abaqus

Dear all

I am trying to model damage at the interface of Dentine and enamel. AS the property of dentine material crack grown in the area of Dentine Enamel Junction(DEJ), when comes to dentine region,it start arresting due to prescence of collagen and mineral fibers in the dentine composite. I am trying to simulate that crack arresting property by modelling the DEJ region with user element facility in abaqus with crack arresting or crack healing capabilities.

Can some body help me in this regard ?

remove order in piezoelectric matrix

I'm working in a iterative method with piezoelectric composites. During the implementation (in MATLAB) I work with the piezolectric components in a single matrix, reduced to a vector by the Hill algebra. However, I'm having problems because of the different orders of the components values. I know there is a way to normalize all the values, but it can't be by dividing the whole matrix by the same number, so, if anybody can help me I will appreceite it. You answer here or write me to naecita@gmail.com

Thanks.

How to add a picture in my program?

Hi every body,

I write a program which draws the shear and bending moment diagrams of a simple beam on matlab.inputs are loads(couples, forces, constant distributed forces and and linear distributed forces) and outputs are shear diagram and bending moment diagram. I want to add free body diagram of the beam too,but i don't know how can I do it,Can anybody help me to solve this problem?

3rd Southern California Symposium on Flow Physics - Saturday, April 18 2009 - UC San Diego

We are pleased to announce the 3rd Southern California Symposium on Flow Physics - or "SoCal Fluids III" - which will take place on the campus of UC San Diego on Saturday, April 18, 2009. The 1st symposium was held in 2007 at Caltech (with 85 participants), and in 2008 at UCLA (with 92 participants). During this one-day exchange of ideas in an informal and collaborative atmosphere, we are inviting postdocs and graduate students to give short APS-style presentations on their research.  All faculty and undergraduate students are also highly encouraged to attend.
