Welcome to Contact Mechanics Forum

Submitted by George G Adams on

Welcome to a new forum on iMechanica which is specifically designed as a "Contact Mechanics Forum". You do not need to register to view the postings on this forum, but you must register (it's free) in order to post something. The posting can be an idea, an announcement of an upcoming conference, an announcement of a journal article (see node/265), the pdf of the manuscript form of the paper can be posted in many cases (see http://romeo.eprints.org/ for a list of journals which permit it), or almost anything related to contact mechanics.

Our forum should be interested in discussing briefly new results, key unsolved problems, open research directions, new avenues, and involve all areas in contact mechanics such as contact elasticity, plasticity, indentation testing, adhesion, friction models, interfacial phenomena in MEMS, nanocontacts, rolling contact fatigue, fretting fatigue, corrugation, and wear. Also if anyone has topics to upload, or notes, or even worked examples or teaching exercise, please feel free to add this material to the forum.

Please use your full name to register for a free account(user/register). It will take you about one minute. You will then receive an email that contains the password which you can use to sign on.

Best wishes,

Mike Ciavarella, George Adams, and Jim Barber

I want to model the shot peening process using FE method. there i come across one concept called HOURGLASSING. I am not able to undersatand its significance. Pl send me the details sir.

It's a wonderful idea to set a contact mechanics forum.as we know, contact problems in FEA is very difficult. My daily tasK is to calculate the mechanical strenth with contact for plastic composite. How to make it convergent is a big challenge for me.Our analyse objects are toys,so the geometry character is very abnormal, exsiting so many small faces, small edges, etc. Abaqus is a very excellent software,i believe it can solve our problem if i know it furtherly, not settling on the superficial.

searching for the guys who work with me in the same background,we can share and get more progress.TKS.

looking forward to see your good article.

i have what i supose to be an easy optimization problem to do it with ANSYS. it is a plate (1.75mx1.75m) with 4 holes wich i need to determine the optimum location (x,y) and radius (R)  to minimize the maximum Von Mises straining (SQV). Constraint: 0.04m<Ri<0.2m; Af>0.08*1.75*1.75. Af is the total area of holes and Ri his respective radius. P1=P2= 1200N/m. Material Steel: E=200GPa, v=0.29

Please some one help me until: thursday, 14.05.2009

Thank you.

Hello, dear G Adams

I am a mechanical engineering students, not a mechanician. But my research concerned greatly with contact mechanics.

Recently, I'm thinking about this problem:common engineering processes such as shot peening, ion implantation, deep rolling and case hardening introduce graded surface to machine elements in a controlled manner, especially hardening case or induction hardening are often used to modify the surfaces of many machine element, such as bearings and gears. But, in finite element analysis of the  contact, the effects of these modified surface are rarely considered. Because the elastic modulus remains the same(will it change? I have not find any literature that say it will change), the effect of hardened(modified) surface find no way to included in FEA.

My question is: is it worth to consider this problem? can you kindly give me some advice?
